The first step towards becoming a professional model is to take snapshots of yourself. Snapshots are quick informal pictures you can take with a cellphone camera. Their purpose is to capture you in your natural state and give the clients or agencies an idea of how you look. These will be the images you send to modeling agencies, so taking high-quality photos will help get you through the door.
When taking snapshots, there are a few simple things to keep in mind. The fist, whether you’re a guy or girl, is not to wear any makeup as clients want to see a natural look. Second, is to take the images against a plain background, white or light grey walls work best. Whoever is taking the images should hold the camera at your eye level. Lastly, it is best to wear skinny jeans and a plain fitted T-shit, or bathing suit. Taking snapshots in bright natural light will lead to the best quality images. (Sample snapshots are attached below.)
2. Find the right model agency
Now that you have taken the best snapshots, it is time to consider what model agency is the best fit for you. There are dozens of different agencies out there, several of which are not reputable, so doing proper research is a good idea before sending in your submission. Sites like models.com can give you a good idea of what agencies represent some of the industries most successful models, and will help you narrow down your options to a handful of reputable agencies.
Keep in mind that even the best and largest agencies out there might not be the best fit for your type of look. Depending on preference, you can either sign with a large or boutique agency. Large agencies have a big board of models and often work with many clients; however, they tend to offer their models less personalized attention. On the other hand, a more boutique agency represents a smaller selection of models and often specializes in representing models with a particular type of look or style. Boutique agencies tend to offer their smaller board of models more personalized attention and could be a good fit if you are just starting out with your modeling career.
3. What to wear and do at castings
Once represented by an agency, you will start receiving casting or go-see calls. These are in-person auditions, where clients will see and select models for a particular brand. Casting calls are where the decisions for which model books the job are made, so it is essential that you make a good impression.
What to wear: When attending castings, it is best to wear simple fitted clothing, much like the outfits you would wear in a snapshot. Skinny jeans and a plain fitted top are always a good way to go. Many models stick with an all-black outfit; however, switching things up with the use of some fun colors is an excellent way to stand out to clients. Just remember not to wear anything baggy or with busy patterns/logos.
How to act: During castings, clients look at more than just how you look, but your personality as well. They want someone who is easy to work with and will represent their brand in a positive. Therefore, when meeting clients, it is essential to be enthusiastic and respectful. Often the lines and wait time at go-sees can be long, so some models get annoyed, if you are one of them, do not let that show when it is your turn to meet the client.
4. Best go-to modeling poses
Taking pictures is an integral part of modeling, whether it be at casting calls or actual modeling jobs. Knowing a few killer possess will help you be more confident and look more experienced. Photographers always appreciate models who know what they are doing, so having a set of poses in your back pocket is a vital component of any photoshoot session.
My personal favorite pose is thumb inside your jeans pocket while the other hand hangs by your side, with one leg slightly bent. This is a simple yet effective pose that will instantly make you look more confident and relaxed. (Find more great poses attached in the sample below.)
5. Build your portfolio
When starting out, your agency will likely send you to test photoshoots. Test shoots are meant to build your modeling portfolio and help you gain some experience in front of the camera. Filling your portfolio with images from different jobs or test photoshoots is an essential component for any model. Clients often look through model portfolios and decide who they would like to see unperson at the job casting. Therefore, filling your portfolio with high-quality images featuring a range of different looks and expressions will help you book a wider variety of jobs for various brands.
6. Be patient
I am sure you can’t wait to become a supermodel; however, it is important to be patient. In the modeling world, success rarely, if ever, comes overnight. Even if for the first few months, you book little to no modeling jobs, do not get discouraged. The modeling industry has a huge amount of competition, so even booking one or two jobs at the start of your career is something to be proud of.
Stay positive; your big break can be just around the corner!
